You may think wine cellars are only meant for the rich and
famous or for someone who owns are large house, well that’s not
entirely true. A cellar is by definition basement storage used
primarily to store food and drinks especially wines for use
throughout the year, a cellar will remain at a constant cool
temperature all year round. As a collector and fan of fine wine,
you may already know that good wine storage is very important.
When wine is properly stored, they will improve in aroma and
flavor as they mature. The ideal temperature for wine storage is
around 50 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity level at 50-70%. The
conventional wisdom is that white wine should be served chilled
and red wine at room temperature, with this wisdom, you should
also be aware not to ever store your bottles in the cupboard
next to the heater or cooker because the heat will make the wine
taste muddy, at the same time never leave it out in the garden
shed in sub-zero temperature as well as extreme cold will mute
the flavours.
Most of us live in apartments or houses without a basement,
that makes it somewhat harder to have a large collection of
wines, and what most of us do is to pay a wine merchant a
nominal fee to store them for us, the down part is the we can
only store our wines by a couple of dozens at one time.
Having your own wine cellar does not require large
renovations to your home or burning a hole in your bank account.
The two main points to bear in mind are that bottles need to be
stored horizontally and away from sources of heat. You can
choose to pile them up on top of each other on a rack. Keeping
the bottles on their sides enables the wine to be in constant
contact with the corks, thus preventing them from drying out and
loosing their flavours. Also remember not to store them too high
as heat rises.
There are many types of wine cellars you can choose from
depending on your budget and room size. The most basic ‘cellars’
found in most homes are simple components range from building
blocks that will allow expansions as your collection grows. Some
of us choose have our wine collection on display and this can
easily be done by utilizing space under a staircase, converting
a closet space or simply purchasing a self contained wine cellar
that can be plugged in virtually anywhere in the house.
If you choose to convert the closet room to a cellar, there
are a few important details to implement. First the room in
which you’ll be using as the cellar must be as level as possible
and treated with a waterproof sealer. Keep the lighting as soft
and minimum as possible and walls are well insulated. If you
have windows, it must be insulated and covered because the light
that enters through the window is detrimental to proper wine
storage.
Once again, building wine cellar or buying a self contained
wine cellar may not necessarily be expensive; it depends on
sizes, added technical features and decorations. However, a
cellar is deemed an investment to protect your even more
expensive investment which is your wine collection.
